The World’s Largest Wedding Cake

The World’s Largest Wedding Cake

Prepare to be stunned by this gargantuan beauty

Feast your eyes on the largest wedding cake on record.

Here at The Daily Meal, we love wedding cakes. From nerdy themed ones to gorgeous vintage ones, we love the artistry and passion that goes into making these confectionary wonders. But never have we seen (and maybe never will again) a wedding cake of this proportion.

According to a representative from Guinness World Records, the world’s largest wedding cake ever displayed was baked by Mohegan Sun Hotel and Casino’s chef Lynn Mansel and a team of 57 chefs and "pastry artisans" at a New England showcase in Uncasville, Conn. The cake itself weighed in at 6.818 tonnes (15.032 pounds) and had seven tiers — each of which took two forklift trucks to raise. If this cake were at a real wedding, it could have fed 59,000 people and evidently weighed more than a bull elephant.

Its predecessors weighed in "only" at 5,334 pounds (made by Universal Studios in Orlando, Fla., on June 12, 2003) and 1,530 pounds (Serendipity 3 Restaurant and World of Chantilly at Serendipity Restaurant in New York on Feb.14, 2001).

No one has since broken chef Mansel and team’s 2004 record.

The towering wedding cake for Don Corleone's daughter in The Godfather has nothing on the confection baked by a team of 58 chefs at Connecticut casino Mohegan Sun in 2004. The seven-tiered cake weighed more than 15,000 pounds (with nearly 5,000 pounds of frosting!) and required some cooking tools not found in most kitchens -- it took two forklifts to raise each tier.
Our take: The vanilla and almond frosting sounds delicious, but these days, bigger wedding cakes aren't always better. Cupcake stands in lieu of a wedding cake have been popular for a few years, and the hottest trend in wedding cakes right now is serving small, two-tiered cakes that double as centerpieces on each table.

Though a billionaire Indian steel baron threw a $60 million wedding for his daughter in 2004, factor in inflation and the most expensive wedding was a seven-day affair for Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai, and his bride, Princess Salama. The 1981 wedding, which would cost $100 million today, included a stadium big enough for 20,000 wedding guests built especially for the celebration.
Our take: Every couple that struggles to stick to their wedding budget can learn a valuable lesson here: The bigger the guest list, the bigger the bill. Invite 20,000 of your nearest and dearest, and a price tag in the millions is understandable. If you're looking for ways to save, though, start by cutting your guest list.

1. National Day Wedding Show cake:

It was created in England in a bakery named Chester. It is world’s most expensive cake. It was made for the wedding. It was displayed in National Gay Show. The diamonds were given by the jewelers of the Liverpool.

When Wedded Wonderland featured Ali and Lana’s lavish nuptials back in 2014, their seven tier Wedding cake blew us away. In keeping with the opulent styling of the entire event, the cake was no exception. Completely enshrouded in white roses, this couple took monochrome styling (and dessert) to a whole other level… literally!

This intricate, five-tier creation just screams glamour and sheer decadence. Unsurprisingly, it’s receiving a lot of love on social media. But size aside, what really sets this cake apart is the difference in texture between each tier. From its ruffled base to its quilted midsection, the brilliance is in the detail.

The inside info: Cooking a favorite restaurant recipe at home is never the same as enjoying that dish in the restaurant. Even if the home cook manages to duplicate the dish exactly, restaurant dining means that someone is doing the cooking -- and the serving and the cleanup.

A cookbook devoted to the dishes that make a place famous offers a glimpse behind the kitchen doors where professional chefs work at a feverish pace. Even if that book contains recipes far too fussy to attempt at home, it's still fun to see what goes into the dish.

"Under the Mohegan Sun: A Celebration of Cuisine & Culture," published by the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority in Uncasville, pulls the recipes from the casino's many restaurants into one book. The opening pages recount the history of the Mohegan tribe. A description of the 13 moons that represent the lunar months in the Mohegan year show how closely the calendar followed the growing and hunting seasons of the year.

Corn, beans and seafood were staples of the Mohegans, and recipes for succotash, three-bean casserole, cranberry-stuffed acorn squash, steamed fish and wild rice, and clam chowder illustrate how these foods were eaten.

The bulk of the book and its color photographs show the diversity of cuisines under the casino's roof. Chapters are divided by restaurant, with representative recipes. Herb gnocchi and kirsch-braised pork shanks with sweet potato polenta from Todd English's Tuscany are among the celebrity chef's interpretations of regional Italian cuisine. The casino's Bamboo Forest is a destination for Asian cuisine, with Jade Sea scallops and curry fried rice among the 11 recipes from the restaurant's menu.

The dessert chapter, which closes the book, covers the creation of the world's largest wedding cake, a 7-tiered 15,000-plus-pound cake baked and built by the pastry staff, which earned it a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. Recipes for Falling Chocolate Cake with Raspberry Sauce and Tiramisu are scaled down for the home kitchen.

The book is sold at the Mohegan Sun or online at

A recipe: Mohegan Sun's executive chef, Michael Luboff, and executive sous chef Craig Schmalz created soups and chowders using native ingredients for the Tribal Soups chapter. This hearty chicken and corn chowder uses both chicken and corn stocks as the base.

* 5 tablespoons all-purpose flour

* 2 cups Mohegan Corn Stock (recipe below)

* 1/3 cup white shoepeg corn

* 1/4 cup chopped red bell pepper

* 2/3 cup chopped butternut squash

* 1 cup chopped cooked chicken

* 1/4 cup chopped dried cranberries

* Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

Heat the butter in a large stockpot over low heat. Add the onion, celery and potato and cook until the onion and celery are tender, about 10 minutes. Stir in the flour and cook over low heat for 7 minutes.

Add the chicken stock and the Mohegan Corn Stock gradually. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Add the yellow corn, white shoepeg corn, red bell pepper, butternut squash and cooked chicken. Return to a boil, and reduce heat. Simmer for 45 minutes. Stir in the dried cranberries. Stir in the cream gradually and season with salt and pepper. Makes 10 servings.

To make Mohegan Corn Stock: Combine 4 cups yellow corn and 2 cups white shoepeg corn with 4 quarts of cold water in a large stockpot. Add 3 tablespoons sugar and 1 tablespoon kosher salt. Bring to a boil, and reduce heat. Cook until the liquid is reduced by half. Strain through a fine mesh strainer, reserving broth and corn. Makes 2 quarts.
