Roll Your Way through Sunday at Masa 14

Roll Your Way through Sunday at Masa 14

Attend a popup sushi school with Kaz Okochi, sushi chef extraordinaire

The golden eel roll at Masa 14.

Give your Sunday a fun-day boost and get schooled in the art of sushi rolling at Masa 14. Renowned chef Richard Sandoval’s hip 14th Street restaurant has become a go-to spot for Asian and Latin fare, but their Sushi Sunday School is a sold-out hit with diners.

This monthly popup class is the brainchild of acclaimed restaurateur and sushi chef Kaz Ockochi, and his Sunday Sushi School runs from 6 to 9 p.m. the first Sunday of every month from September through December, meaning you have one chance left (December 7) to learn how to roll like a pro.

Chef Okochi is a partner and owner at Masa 14 and he, along with his capable lieutenants — executive chef Steven Hartzell and sous chef Chris Hawkins — have put together a laid-back program that teaches guests how to make tamaki hand rolls and inside-out rolls in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. The cost of the class is $15 per person, excluding tax and gratuity, and for $21 per person, sake-lovers can pair their sushi with a 6.8-ounce pour of Nihonsakari sake.

For the tamaki hand rolls, guests choose from crispy shrimp or spicy tuna, while the proteins for the inside-out rolls are salmon or spicy salmon. After the proteins have been chosen, each guest can create individualized flavors by adding ingredients such as ginger, scallion, cucumber, avocado, and a variety of sauces. Always the attentive hosts, the chefs at Masa 14 have not forgotten about our vegetarian friends, and offer vegetarian options, too. Just be sure to specify how many vegetarians you have in your party when you call to make your reservation. Hurry, though, because the classes are small and sell out early. Kampai!
