Air Fryer Chicken Nuggets

Chicken nuggets are a finger-food staple, but when most people think of making them at home they start with frozen nuggets from the store. I am here to tell you, "You can make a tasty nugget at home with no frying and minimal clean up!"

Air Fryer Chicken Nuggets are my favorite way to make this light lunch, simple dinner, or after school snack for my kids (or myself, who am I kidding?!). They are crispy, flavorful, and so much better than any store-bought variety. The cleanup is SO easy!

  1. Preheat the Air Fryer
  2. Cut the Chicken Into Nuggets
  3. Set Up the Dredging Station
  4. Coat Chicken With Batter
  5. Spritz With Cooking Spray
  6. Air Fry In Batches

Preheating the air fryer is just as important as preheating an oven. Actually, it may be more important since the cooking time is often drastically lower in an air fryer. Don’t skip this step!

To preheat your air fryer simply set the temperature to 375°F and the time somewhere between ten and fifteen minutes, or however long you think it will take you to get all your chicken battered.

To go from breasts to nuggets, the first thing you’ll need to do is pound out the chicken. The best tools for this job are:

Pounding out the chicken will ensure quick and even cooking when it comes time to cook your nuggets in the air fryer.

Place the chicken breast in the ziplock bag one at a time, remove as much air as possible, and seal it. Then, beginning at the thick portion of the chicken breast, firmly pound it out using the flat-end of the mallet or the rolling pin.

Pound the chicken, working toward the thin end of the breast until it is about a 1/4″ in thickness. The goal is to get the chicken as thin as possible without tearing the meat apart.

To cut the chicken breasts, use a sharp knife and cut the chicken, against the grain, into slices about two inches in width. Then, cut each slice into one-and-a-half to two-inch pieces.

To set up a dredging station for your Air Fryer Fried Chicken Nuggets, you’ll need three shallow trays or bowls (such as a pie plate). In tray one, add all-purpose flour and spices, tray two will consist of eggs and water, and tray three will be a simple mixture of panko and salt.

You’ll kick off the dredging with a nice even coating of the seasoned flour. Be sure to shake off any excess flour before sending the chicken to the egg mix!

Next, submerge each chicken nugget in the egg tray, taking care to get the egg mixture up and around the sides as well. Allow any excess to drip off before moving on to the next tray.

The last tray is the panko breadcrumbs. Add the chicken to the panko breadcrumbs, turning the chicken as needed and pressing gently to make sure the panko coating adheres.

Have a large rimmed baking sheet off to the side of your dredging station when assembling your Air Fryer Chicken Nuggets. The baking sheet will provide you with ample workspace to spread out the nuggets without crowding them. Where there is no oil, there is no browning. Which means that gorgeous golden, crispy crust? It’s not going to happen unless it comes into contact with a spritz of oil.

Allowing room between each chicken nugget is important as it allows you to get an even, full-coverage mist of oil across both the surface and along the sides of each and every nugget.

Lightly coat the panko breading with the cooking spray, turn each nugget, and spritz again.

Airflow is very important when it comes to air fryer recipes. You want air to circulate around the entire chicken nugget in order to get that golden, crunchy crust. Therefore, you must fry the chicken in batches and avoid stacking…tempting as it might be.

Add the chicken to the air fryer in a single layer and fry at 375°F for eight to eleven minutes (or until the chicken is fully cooked through). Remove the Air Fryer Chicken Nuggets from the basket using a pair of kitchen tongs, and repeat as needed.

Then, allow the nuggets to cool slightly, and serve alongside your favorite dipping sauce!

There are multiple factors that go into cooking time, and this is the reason recipe developers always give you a range of time rather than one, specific number. The temperature of the chicken as it goes into the air fryer, how thick it is, how large the nugget has been cut…all of these factors affect cooking time.

Chicken nuggets that are a quarter-inch thick and two inches in circumference will take between eight and eleven minutes at 375°F to cook through in the air fryer. Larger chicken nuggets will take longer and smaller chicken nuggets will take less time.

How to Make Air Fryer Chicken Nuggets

Some of the ingredients you will need to make these Easy Chicken Recipes are in this picture below. However, I have the full ingredients and recipe to print out towards the bottom of the page.

Healthy Air Fryer Chicken Nuggets

Here’s what you’ll need to get started making your own copycat nuggets:

  • 1 – 2 pound(s) of boneless skinless chicken breasts – cut into bite size pieces
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic salt
  • 1 teaspoon of seasoned salt
  • 1 teaspoon of pepper
  • 2 cups of flour
  • 1/3 cup of powdered sugar
  • 1 egg – beaten
  • 1 cup of milk
  • Spray Olive oil

Follow these simple instructions for delicious Chick-fil-a style nuggets at home:

Start by cutting the chicken in bite-size pieces, sprinkle with the garlic salt, seasoned salt, and pepper.

Break the egg in a medium-size bowl, and beat the egg with a whisk until it’s a lemon-yellow color, and frothy. Add the milk to the egg and stir it well.

In a large Ziploc bag, add the flour and powdered sugar, and shake to mix it.

Dip the chicken in the milk/egg mixture, and drop the chicken pieces into the bag of flour/powdered sugar.

When you have several pieces of chicken in the bag (probably 20 pieces), twist the top of the bag so the flour doesn’t spill out, and gently shake the chicken pieces in the bag to coat.

Feel free to toss it in a large bowl if you prefer that method.

Place the breaded chicken pieces in the basket of the air fryer and spray the pieces with the Spray Olive Oil until they’re coated.

Set the Air Fryer temperature on 375, and set the time to 12 minutes.

Turn the chicken pieces halfway through baking, and spray the other side with the Spray Olive Oil.

When the pieces of chicken are done, remove them from the air fryer to a serving plate, and serve them immediately.

Easy Chicken Recipes

Studies have shown that if you like this, you will also love the following recipes. I have pulled them together for you right here!

Is air frying healthy?

It depends on what you’re making, but overall, yes! Air frying is definitely healthier than deep frying. Air fryers use hot air instead of oil to cook food while still producing that crispiness we all adore about fried food.

For me, it’s the halfway point between baking and deep frying. Air frying creates crisper food than baking and while it’s SIGNIFICANTLY healthier than deep frying in oil, it doesn’t get food quite as crispy.

Here&rsquos the deal, you do not need many ingredients for this simple dinner idea. Really, most are probably already in your pantry! I especially love that there is no need to add any oil to your air fryer for these nuggets. They remind me so much of chick-fil-a!

You can definitely substitute the butter with milk. When we do that I like to use buttermilk.

McDonald’s Chicken Nuggets Recipe

Just like the Big Mac, their fries and the Happy Meal are some of the most iconic McDonald’s menu items, so too does the Chicken McNugget fall into this hall of fame. We’re so happy to bring you this McDonald’s chicken nuggets recipe.

They have been around since the late 70s and the recipe has been tried, tested and changed over the years. No matter what changes they made, their nuggets always stayed delicious. They are crunchy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. They have the perfect amount of salt and are fried for the perfect amount of time.

Add your chicken, salt and one egg in a food processor. Blend until the mixture looks like a paste.

Place the corn starch in a bowl. With wet hands, shape a handful of the mixture into a nugget. Dip the nuggets into the corn starch and place it on a lined baking sheet.

In a large bowl, combine the water, one egg, mustard, spices and flour. Place the nuggets in the batter and place back onto the baking sheet.

Place the sheet in the freezer and allow them to freeze for 1 hour.

Heat your oil to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Deep fry the first batch for 5 minutes. Allow the nuggets to drain on paper towel and deep fry again for 5 minutes. This helps the chicken cook through without burning it.

Reasons Why Air Fryer Chicken Nuggets Are The Best:

  • First, they taste delicious!
  • Air fried nuggets are healthier than oil fried nuggets
  • Kid-friendly (or they bring out the kid in us?)
  • You can dip them in whatever you want
  • It only takes 8 minutes to cook them
  • They freeze really well
  • Make a great dinner, snack or appetizer
  • They are inexpensive to make
  • No additives like the frozen bags at the grocery store

There are many other reasons but you get the point. We always have frozen chicken breast in our freezer and this is an easy go-to recipe when you don’t know what to make. As I mentioned, these nuggets freeze really well in a sealed bag or container so you can make a large batch and have dinner in the freezer for a night when you have no time.

Ingredients Needed to Make These Nuggets

  • 16-20 oz chicken breasts, cut into nugget size
  • salt and pepper to season chicken
  • olive oil
  • Italian bread crumbs
  • panko breadcrumbs
  • parmesan cheese, finely grated
  • oil spray for air frying

How to Make Air Fried Chicken Nuggets

  1. Dry the chicken with a paper towel and season with salt and pepper.
  2. Place the breadcrumbs, panko, and cheese in a bowl and stir to combine. Place olive oil in another bowl.
  3. Coat each chicken piece with olive oil first and then roll in breadcrumb mixture.
  4. Preheat air fryer for 5 minutes at 400°. Spray the basket with non-stick spray and place chicken pieces in the air fryer basket. Spray the chicken pieces as well and cook for 4 minutes. Flip the chicken, spray again, and cook for 4 more minutes on the other side.

My Favorite Air Fryer

There are so many different types of air fryers out there now, and each one is slightly different. There are countertop air fryers, air fryer ovens, and air fryer attachments to name a few. They even make full-size ovens that act as air fryers now!! I was lucky enough to be gifted the Mealthy CrispLid attachment for my Instant Pot and I love it! In fact, I love it so much, I’ve gifted it to others. It fits right on top of my Instant Pot and has a glass lid so I can see what’s happening to my food while air frying. It is a little smaller than some other air fryers out there, but it’s the perfect size for anything I have air-fried so far.
